Tax system reform call John O’Connell, chief executive of the Taxpayers’ Alliance, has called for fundamental reform of the tax system, saying the tax code is “riddled with such complexity that few mere mortals – and even fewer businesses – can fully comprehend it.” He suggests that “too many politicians use the complexity of the modern tax system as an excuse to incessantly tinker rather than attempt bolder reform,” going on to say governments “fixate on rates rather than the entire structure of the tax regime.” Officials, he adds, freeze thresholds and add exemptions, “rather than addressing how the system itself stifles growth, innovation and productivity.” Mr O’Connell argues: “Every missed opportunity to recalibrate our tax system for the modern world will mean lower growth, lost investment and fewer jobs.”
