Johnson has increased taxes as much as New Labour Analysis by the Institute of Fiscal Studies (IFS) shows that Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Chancellor Rishi Sunak have increased taxes by the same scale as the New Labour government. The report shows that policies put in place since 2019 will see the overall burden of tax rise by the equivalent of two percentage points of GDP. This is around the same size as that overseen by Tony Blair and bigger than that implemented by his successor Gordon Brown. Isaac Delestre, a research economist at the IFS and an author of the report, said: "Mr Johnson and Mr Sunak may find a way to cut some taxes before the next election. But if we look just at their actions to date, they have announced as large a tax increase in two years as Mr Blair and Mr Brown did in 10." With April set to see National Insurance rates increase and the end of several tax cuts implemented during the pandemic, such as those to business rates, the IFS report said: "If the Chancellor's plans remain unchanged, next month will mark the beginning of a steep ascent in the path of UK taxation.”
