Rise in house prices drives up IHT receipts Britons paid an average of £213,500 in inheritance tax in the financial year 2020-2021, according to probate group Final Duties. The taxman collected an additional £739m in IHT receipts compared to the previous year, totalling £5.57bn from almost 27,000 estates. The rise in receipts is attributed to the increase in property values prompted by the stamp duty holiday. Inheritance tax receipts have continued to increase this year, with HMRC collecting £3.9bn in the six-month period. The average bill is expected to increase to £233,000 this tax year, with over 30,000 families facing a bill. "Inheritance tax has found itself the unexpected centre of the UK's political battlefield," said Nicholas Hyett, investment manager at Wealth Club. The future of this controversial tax is worth arguing about," he added.
