1.8m over-65s forced to file tax returns Nearly two million over-65s including many motorsport business owners now have to file tax returns, according to HMRC data. More than 1.8m over 65s had to fill out a self-assessment tax return for the previous tax year, with the total up by 100,000 in five years. The report shows that over-65s now make up 16% of taxpayers filing returns, compared to those aged 16 to 24 who make up just 2.7%. Office for National Statistics figures show that in 2020/21, the average pensioner had a weekly income of £361 – up from £322 in 2015/16 and from £316 in 2010/11.
